A laser produces a coherent, collimated, and monochromatic beam of light by exciting atoms to a higher energy level. Lasers are distinguished from other light sources particularly because of their coherence. The laser stays narrow for long distances owing to its spatial coherence property and allows it to be focused on a tight spot. Owing to these attributes, lasers are largely used in applications such as laser pointers, laser cutting, and lithography. Lasers are segmented depending on the type of lasing medium they use such as gas, optical fiber, solid state, and others (including excimer lasers and semiconductor lasers). However, this report focuses only on CO lasers, fiber lasers, and solid-state lasers for industrial applications only.
